NBC Universal sponsors the Canadian premier of Giancarlo Esposito’s Directorial Debut Gospel Hill which open’s the 9th Annual ReelWorld Film Festival, April 15 at 7:30pm at the Scotiabank Theatre (259 Richmond). Giancarlo will be in attendance for the screening of his incredible film, with a stellar cast which includes Danny Glover, Angela Bassett, Julia Stiles, Samuel L. Jackson and upcoming Canadian talent Taylor Kitsch.
Gospel Hill won Best Feature Film at the 2009 Texas Black Film Festival, is the gripping tale of the residents of a black neighborhood in Julia, South Carolina who are being forced out of their homes to make way for a multimillion-dollar golf course development. Race relations are strained just as they were thirty years before when a black civil rights activist was assassinated in the town. Danny Glover gives a subdued performance as John Malcolm, the son of assassinated civil rights activist Peter Malcolm (Samuel L. Jackson) whose unsolved murder at the height of his career left all of Gospel Hill reeling. Thirty years later, John has withdrawn from the community, apparently resigned to living out his days haunted by his father’s unfulfilled mission. His feelings of helplessness put strain on his marriage to Sarah (Angela Bassett), a community activist, who fruitlessly entreats him for support in her campaign to stop an invading band of developers seeking to buy up Gospel Hill and turn it into a golf course. Sarah befriends the town’s new schoolteacher Rosie (Julia Stiles), whose budding romance with Joel Herrod (Canada’s own Taylor Kitsch) the son of its notoriously bigoted sheriff has thrust her into the center of the town’s disputes. Gospel Hill is a gripping, revealing and dramatic tale touching on issues of race, and the power of the human spirit to overcome the pain and hatred of division. Individual tickets for the Wednesday Opening Night Gala screening of Gospel Hill and/or Screening and After-party are available here . Second screening on Saturday April 18, 2009 at 8:30 PM at the Carlton, available here.
