The African American Masters Calendar from Tide-Mark

African American Masters features 12 paintings by acclaimed black artists

WINDSOR, CT.  The African American Masters calendar pictures works by black artists who were often unacknowledged during their lifetimes. The calendar includes paintings from the Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art. The just-released African American Masters 2011 calendar is published by Tide-mark Press.

Artists whose works are featured in the calendar include Romare Bearden, William H. Johnson, Clementine Hunter, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, Lois Mailou Jones, Aaron Douglas, and Robert Scott Duncanson. These works showcase the influence of black experience in the context of American art. Each month includes details about the painting and a biographical entry on the artist.

January shows The Tin Roof by Romare Bearden, a 1978 collage and watercolor on paper. Irene Virginia Clark’s untitled oil on board graces February with a folk art approach to the depiction of a village. June brings Ices I by Jacob Lawrence, a skilled colorist.

In August Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard by Lois Mailou Jones shows off the artist’s skill with watercolors and her love of the island where she spent summers as a child. In which museums have Jones’ works been exhibited? The caption explains. More wonderful pictures are featured throughout the year.

This beautifully designed publication is attractive and useful, with calendar grids that have large blocks for every day of the week. The monthly calendar also includes grids for the previous and forthcoming months, to make planning more convenient. The calendar opens to a generous 14 by 22 inches, nearly 10 percent larger than most other brands and includes major holidays and phases of the moon.

This and other great calendars can be purchased at www.tide-mark.com, through independent booksellers, or at Barnes & Noble, Borders, or Amazon.com.

Tide-Mark Press publishes distinctive books, cards and calendars. Full-color calendar titles range from nautical, art, and landscape, to trains, planes, and gardening.
