NFL star player Vernon Davis and Modern Class Design (MCD), the interior design company founded by Davis and business partner Antone Barnes, has partnered with the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) to host a fundraising event featuring art, fashion and design on Saturday, June 9, 2012. The event will take place at MODA at 1315 Peach Street NE in Atlanta. Tickets are $50 dollars for general admission and $75 dollars for VIP.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the attendance of inner city students at the art focused Camp MODA. Emerging designers from local Atlanta high schools and colleges such as Savannah College of Art and Design and the Portfolio School will be in attendance participating in MCD’s Interior Design Competition. Talented designers will be awarded cash prizes and/or internships with Vernon Davis’ Modern Class Design.

Vernon Davis believes inner-city students growing up in tough neighborhoods like his in Washington, D.C., will gain self-esteem through this program which encourages critical and creative thinking. “I was always interested in art as a kid, but never felt free to pursue it because in my neighborhood you either went in a direction of sports or you got into drug dealing, but definitely not art,” Davis explains. “But it shouldn’t be that way, which is why I’m encouraging kids to pursue art or whatever their dreams are.”

Known as the Mom Strategist™, Redrick explains that mothers have learned to be responsible to their families and children without being responsible to their own needs.

She cites a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that supports the adage “when momma’s not happy, nobody’s happy.” It found that children of depressed mothers were at 30 percent greater risk for depression than other children.

Redrick, winner of the 2009 Women Helping Women Award from Soroptimist International, recommends that mothers make self-care a routine by:

•Scheduling self-care time daily and identify self-care activities that renew and energize, such as reading, meditation, exercise, a hobby or a bubble bath, and plug them into a regular self-care schedule.
•Keeping the self-care plan simple and easy to maintain. This could include fitting in personal activities in the course of helping family. For instance, taking reading or knitting to a child’s athletic practice or music lesson or finding a creative way to exercise during a trip to the park with the kids.
•Enlisting family’s help. This includes delegating household chores and asking for help in maintaining accountability for taking better care of themselves.
•Going out on dates. Redrick recommends that mothers not only plan dates with their husbands, but also go out on their own or with friends.
•Freeing themselves of guilt by understanding that self-care is essential to maintaining good health and being a better parent and spouse.

“Self-care is as much for you as it is for the well-being of your entire family,” Redrick says.

Redrick is CEO of Finding Definitions, LLC, which provides training, coaching, seminars, self-care resources and products for mothers. She founded Time for Mom-Me Self-care groups, and nearly 100 such groups have been established in 17 states to provide mothers camaraderie, accountability, sharing, encouragement and solutions.

Though fiction, Baldwin’s new novel draws on historical events surrounding the African-American community’s reaction to the verdict in the Rodney King trial. Despite beating King in 1991, and a video recording the attack, the several police officers were found not guilty. Immediately upon that news, the riot erupted.

Was the acquittal an unjust verdict? Was the riot justified? How can we all just get along?

Tough questions that different people answer differently.

Which begs the main question and theme of the novel: Why and how do different people come up with different answers and reactions to the same questions and circumstances?

High school senior Anwar Branch is a role-model teenager: smart, savvy and law-abiding. But when he falls in love with Sonja Macetti, a white girl whose dad is a former undercover cop, racial tensions arise. While struggling to deal with Sonja’s interracial love interest, Mike Macetti is on a mission to protect his neighborhood from the recent invasion of the Crips gang in the drug-house down the block.

To further complicate Anwar’s life, his father, Gunther, wants to return to the home he abandoned years ago. He’s also out to destroy the Crips, who threaten his family and his own gang allegiance, the Bloods.

When student Ishmael Smith turns to the Crips for the family he never had, he finds himself under the wings of gang leader Rayhab, who seeks revenge against the father of Ishmael’s classmate.

Just as the tension erupts into violence in their own hood, the entire city of L.A. explodes in apocalyptic chaos.

“The 1992 L. A. riot was ugly and awful,” Baldwin says. “It tore apart neighborhoods, people, friendships, families and lives. I tell the story from a handful of perspectives so that different voices can be heard and untold stories told.”

Baldwin believes that although most people in L.A. tried to “get along” with one another, as King pleaded, some were fueled by bigotry and criminality, determined (or were they pre-determined?) to tear the thinly-woven threads of society apart.
